Summer is here, and we all want our skin to shine as bright as the sun this season! But with all that sun, sweat and sunscreen, skin needs a little extra TLC. So, how do we get smooth skin during the summer? Exfoliation. Learn effective tips about how to exfoliate and explore refreshing treatments with Glen Ivy Hot Springs expert, Debra Marie, an Esthetician at the spa for 10 years. Ready to glow from head to toe? Let’s dive in!
- What are the benefits of exfoliation?
Exfoliation offers numerous benefits for your skin, including the removal of dead skin cells and an improvement in skin texture. Exfoliation can also help prevent clogged hair follicles and unclog pores, reducing congestion in the skin and preventing acne. Cleared pores and fresh skin also allow moisturizers, serums and sunscreens to sink in, boosting the effectiveness and absorption of skin care products.
- What are the different types of exfoliation methods suitable for various skin types?
Exfoliants can be either chemical or mechanical. Most skin types benefit from a combination of chemical and mechanical exfoliants.
Chemical exfoliators consist of acids or fruit enzymes. Chemical exfoliants can be gentler on thinner skin and are more effective in penetrating the skin deeply.
Mechanical exfoliants contain small particles that require manual rubbing of the product onto the skin to buff away dead skin cells. Mechanical exfoliants are highly effective for removing dead skin cells from the skin’s surface, but they do not penetrate as deeply as chemical exfoliants.
- How can exfoliation help alleviate common summer skin concerns, such as sun damage or clogged pores?
Summer can be hard on our skin, with excess oil, sweat and sunscreen buildup. Exfoliation helps to unclog pores, preventing the buildup of dead skin cells, excess oil and product that can lead to breakouts. Exfoliation also promotes cell turnover. UV exposure can cause skin cells to become damaged. By removing dull, dead skin, it reveals fresh new cells underneath, enhancing your summer glow.
- How often should one exfoliate their skin in the summer months?
Sweat, sunscreen, chlorine and salt water make it essential to exfoliate at least twice a week during the summer. However, don’t overdo it, especially after sun exposure. Gentle, hydrating exfoliants are best to avoid irritation. Visiting a professional esthetician can help determine the best form of exfoliation for your specific skin type. For most skin types, applying chemical and/or mechanical exfoliants twice a week is a good baseline.
- What post-exfoliation skincare routine do you recommend to maintain radiant skin?
Your favorite serums and moisturizers will absorb more effectively with regular exfoliation. Apply immediately after exfoliation for best results. Post-exfoliation care is all about soothing, hydrating and locking in that moisture. Additionally, sun protection is non-negotiable. Freshly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to UV rays, so always finish with SPF or higher if heading outdoors. It is crucial to use a high-quality sunscreen whenever you are exposed to the sun. Too much sun exposure can cause burning, flaking and peeling. This can also cause permanent, long-term damage to the skin. Regular exfoliation followed by a suitable serum, moisturizer and sunscreen will keep your skin looking its summer best.
- Are there any professional exfoliation treatments you recommend?
Adding a Bright Boost enhancement to any of the facials at Glen Ivy Hot Springs will give you a deeper clean, as well as reduce inflammation and brighten the skin. Additionally, a Hydrafacial every 28 days is a very effective way to keep your skin smooth, clean and bright. Dermaplaning and microdermabrasion are also highly effective forms of professional exfoliation.
- Are there any DIY exfoliation treatments you recommend?
We do not recommend using salt, sugar or anything crushed up on the face, as this can be too abrasive. To keep your skin glowing at home in between professional treatments, you can find many helpful ingredients in your kitchen. Here are a couple of recipes you can whip up at home.
Gentle Oatmeal Face Scrub
- 1 teaspoon finely ground oatmeal
- 1 teaspoon raw honey
- 1/8 teaspoon turmeric
- Mix well. Apply to the face and gently scrub. Can be left on for 10 minutes.
Revitalizing Coffee Body Scrub
- 2 tablespoons finely ground coffee
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
- Mix well. Scrub your body all over. Can be left for 15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
- Can you share any additional tips or advice on how to achieve and maintain radiant summer skin?
Stay hydrated from the inside, out! Drink plenty of water and eat water-rich foods like cucumber, watermelon and oranges during the hot, summer months. Your skin will thank you! Additionally, I always recommend limiting sun exposure whenever possible. Seek shade during peak sun hours and wear hats or UPF clothing when possible. If you must be in the sun, reapply SPF every 2 hours. Glowing skin is easier to maintain when you avoid long-term damage.
This summer, add exfoliation to your weekly routine and enjoy the benefits of glowing skin!
