The Benefits of Guided Breathwork with Glen Ivy Hot Springs Expert

The Benefits of Guided Breathwork with Glen Ivy Hot Springs Expert hosted at Glen Ivy Hot Springs

What is breathwork? Breathwork is a term used to describe various exercises and techniques focused on controlling and manipulating the breath for physical and mental well-being. These practices often involve conscious and intentional breathing patterns and rhythms. Explore the benefits and effective tips for breathwork with Glen Ivy Hot Springs expert, Cynthia (Cindy) Hubbs-Lonsdale (Esthetician/Trainer, Soma Breath Master Instructor and Yoga Instructor).

1. What are the specific physical benefits of guided breathwork?

There are a multitude of physical benefits of breathing exercise, such as improved cardiac health, circulation, respiratory function, athletic performance, endurance, energy, immune function and pain management… to name just a few. When we breathe in a specific rhythmic pattern, it helps regulate the heart rate, creating a trickle-down effect on the rest of the body’s systems and bringing the whole body into a state of coherence.

2. What are the specific mental benefits of guided breathwork?

Engaging in breathing techniques offers significant mental health benefits, including enhanced emotional regulation, stress relief, improved mood and overall well-being, reduced anxiety and depression, increased focus and mental clarity, and improved cognitive function and memory. Additionally, breathwork offers the potential to release suppressed emotions for healing purposes.

3. Are there variations in breathwork techniques?

Yes! Pranayama, the ancient breathwork practice originating from yogis in India, has many variations, each offering unique approaches and potential benefits.  Specific techniques and rhythms can influence the parasympathetic nervous system (the “rest and digest” response, promoting relaxation and conserving energy). This influences the body to enter a restful state of renewal and healing or a flow state conducive to inspiration, creativity and transformation. The gentle yet transformative rhythmic breathwork I teach is paired with scientifically crafted music that works in harmony with our nervous system to enhance vibrational energy throughout the body. Additionally, intentional mantras and meditations can be personalized for individuals with specific goals to further enhance this transformative process.

4. Can individuals apply different techniques to their needs or personal preferences?

Absolutely! They can and they should. Finding a breathing technique that feels comfortable, effective and is aligned with your specific goal(s) is essential for individuals. Adapting the breathwork practice to fit your daily wants or needs is crucial for maintaining a consistent and effective routine. I’m a huge proponent of listening to your body… it knows what it needs.

5. How can deep breathing techniques be integrated into daily routines?

To successfully integrate deep breathing into your everyday life, focus on consistency and finding opportunities to practice throughout the day.  Try incorporating mindfulness breathing exercises into your existing activities, such as waiting in lines, dealing with traffic or facing stressful situations. Integrating breathwork techniques into your existing routines is also a great start, like an established exercise routine, which can boost workout results and reduce recovery time.  After practicing regularly for the past five years, I have found that I can integrate deep breathing into any point of my day.  Once you become aware of and connected to your breath, it is under your control at will.

6. What tips or recommendations do you have for someone just starting out?

First and foremost, if dealing with any serious health issues, consult your healthcare provider before trying anything new. When starting out, I always recommend seeking guidance if needed! There are many available resources for research and classes to ask questions. I also recommend starting slowly and approaching the practice with gentleness.  Practice and explore different techniques and rhythms to find what suits you. Committing time each day will also help jumpstart your practice. Start with five minutes and build. With practice and consistency, you will find you crave more and can ultimately transform your life. My biggest recommendation during a guided breathing meditation is to allow yourself to fully surrender to the experience and let the breath take you away.

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned participant, by incorporating different techniques personalized to individual needs and preferences, you can experience the benefits that breathwork has to offer.
